About Us

The University of Maryland Medical Intelligent Imaging (UM2ii) Center is an academic research hub for revolutionizing medical imaging AI by bringing together medical, engineering, and industrial experts.

Our name, UM2ii (pronounced ‘you-mee’), is loosely based on the Japanese word ‘Umi,’ which means sea or ocean. And just like the sea, we’re making waves in AI for medical imaging.

A mural of Baltimore’s Inner Harbor called “The Spirit of Charm City” sits at the entrance of the UM2ii Center. An abstracted representation of the heart of the city we call home, a trained eye can pick out many of the famous landmarks that surround its many piers, from the Bromo Seltzers Art Clock Tower to the Pier Six Pavilion.

Water has been a staple in the thematic characterization of the UM2ii Lab, as collaboration is guided by the fluidity of thought and the passion to “make waves” in the medical imaging bioinformatics space. With a local landmark being so geographically close to the University of Maryland School of Medicine, it felt like a natural scene to depict, welcoming visitors to the lab and giving a hint of the spirit of its members.

Making waves is in our DNA.

We come from a long line of disruptors in radiology imaging informatics at the University of Maryland, starting with the first filmless radiology department in the world to game-changing startups. But don’t just take our word for it.

Listen to our Senior Advisor, Dr. Eliot Siegel, talk about how the UM2ii Center is pushing the boundaries of medical imaging AI and making waves.
